Spectacles Of Devotion
In my current body of work, Spectacles of Devotion, I look at several religious minorities, in public and/or at prayer (Catholic Nuns, Greek Orthodox Priests, Hasidic Jews, and Muslim women). The works explore how people at prayer appear to others, and what appears to them during their devotions. The viewer is invited to participate in the visual interplay between what is actually happening and what is actively imagined.
While most viewers may have difficulty identifying with the peculiarity of my subjects’ dress and forms of religious practice, they have an easier time identifying with their spirituality. It is in this movement from perceived difference to sensed likeness that prejudice is undermined.
